Each year during the back-to-school season, Char-Em United Way collects donated school supplies to distribute to children in need in the Char-Em Intermediate School District. On Saturday, Aug. 15 school buses were parked at Walmart in Petoskey and Kmart in Charlevoix. Char-Em United Way also had a table at Festival on the Bay in the kids section to share our work in Early Childhood Education as part of our Education Initiative.
“With assistance from volunteers we collected over 9,500 items this year. All supplies collected went to children in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties allowing them to start the new school year with confidence. The number of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch show that almost half of the families in the district are still struggling financially and the community’s support of Stuff the Bus can provide a huge relief,” stated Rachael Barkley, Char-Em United Way Project Manager.
Supplies were distributed to schools in the Char-Em Intermediate School District within the first few weeks of school. We invite you to join us next August for Stuff the Bus 2016.
