So What?

Our 2009-2010 Campaign has come to and an end and many people ask the question, So What? Our answer to this question is expressed with enthusiasm and excitement. Simply check out our 2009-2010 Community Impact Report to see the progress that has been made in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.

This report shares a glimpse of the work that we have completed over the last year. From investing $166,750 in 23 programs of 21 local health and human service agencies, to our 5 impact areas, partner agencies and current projects and strategic initiatives, we encourage you to check out the report and see the impact we have had in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.

Without the dollars contributed, we could not assist Manna in providing food to local pantries, Exceptional Riders in increasing the self-esteem of more than 18 kids with physical and developmental disabilities or Northern Homes in decreasing and preventing the effects of losing a home on a family.

After looking over the report, we are sure you'll see the impact your investment in United Way has. After all, United Way does much more than a community Campaign and we could not do it without YOU!

2010 Community Investment Allocations Process Complete

Char-Em United Way has just completed the 2010 Community Investment Allocation process.  This year 29 health and human service programs were funded with a total of $168,175 being dispersed to 26 agencies throughout Charlevoix and Emmet counties.

This year we established the following five funding priorities for 2010:  Fulfilling Urgent and Basic Human Needs; Improving Financial Stability; Promoting Individual and Family Health and Wellness; Increasing Independence and Self Sufficiency; and Helping Youth Succeed.

These priorities ensured that, with the increased need in our community for health and human services and limited dollars available, our Community Investment Allocations were made as wisely as possible.  Our investors (donors) want to know that we are making the greatest possible impact in the areas of need identified by our community.  Therefore, we are focusing on measuring results in programs and sharing our priorities with the community more effectively.

Agencies invited to submit a full application were scheduled to make a presentation to CEUW’s Citizen Review Panel. The Citizen Review Panel reviewed the requests for funding, heard presentations, asked for additional information, and made recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors. The Board of Directors met in May to consider the recommendations of the Panel and made the final Community Investment Allocation decisions.

Strategic Initiatives

  • 2-1-1 - We are working to bring this effective information and referral system to our community by 2011.
  • Financial Stability Partnership - Working with other agencies, we are developing programs to help families get off the financial tightrope.
  • Public Transportation- We are providing leadership to FEET-Friends Enhancing Emmet Transit to establish a public transit system helping people get to work, appointments, and recreation.
  • Volunteer Connections- Our "virtual volunteer center" launched in December of 2009. It is the mission of Volunteer Connections to serve the volunteer needs of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, by providing additional resources for volunteer recruitment, recognition, and management. The purpose of Volunteer Connections is to promote and increase volunteerism in our two county area. Volunteer Connections will assist organizations in maximizing their utilization of volunteers while assisting community members in finding meaningful volunteer opportunities.
