Benefit Access Initiative will help local families

Every day that passes, there are many obstacles in the way for our struggling Northern Michigan families.  These obstacles have become so large that some of these families have no idea where or whom to turn to for help.
We have launched a new program that will help respond to this need. The Benefit Access Initiative is here to help families identify and access services that can help them improve their financial stability.
Our AmeriCorps member, will serve as a navigator to meet the immediate need for connecting financially struggling families with community resources available.
So many families are struggling right now and we need to try and do whatever we can do to help them. The Benefits Access Community Navigator will be stationed all over Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.

He or she will also assist clients by showing them how to navigate the 2-1-1 database and Department of Human Services (DHS) MiBridges portal, and helping them to complete and submit the applications for benefits electronically. He or she will also assist them with gathering all the necessary supporting documentation to complete the application.
In early 2012, DHS will make it possible for everyone to apply online for all available programs. New or current clients will have the opportunity to view their case online. This allows families to check the status of their case, see what documentation their case worker needs and file their quarterly reviews online as well. This will help those families that can’t make it in to their closest DHS office, but may pose barriers for those without computer access or skills. United Way's Benefits Access Initiative will help to fill in that gap. Partial support for the project comes from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation.
We are also seeking volunteers who would like to give their time to help families navigate the MiBridges and the 2-1-1 Database. Training will be offered to those who would like to volunteer their time. If you would like to give your time to help families, please contact us at
